Getting Around

Seaplane Transfers

The most scenic way to reach remote atolls — Twin Otter seaplanes operated by Trans Maldivian Airways offer breathtaking aerial views of the atolls. Transfers cost $300–$600 per person.

Speedboat Transfers

Fast and affordable transfers to resorts and local islands within 1–2 hours of Malé. Most resorts within North and South Malé Atolls use speedboats.

Local Ferries

Government-operated ferries connecting inhabited islands at very low costs. Ideal for budget travelers visiting local islands. Schedules can be infrequent.

Domestic Flights

Maldivian Airlines and FlyMe operate domestic flights to regional airports across the atolls, connecting to resorts in distant atolls like Addu and Haa Dhaalu.

Dhoni Boat Rides

Traditional Maldivian wooden boats used for island hopping, fishing trips, snorkeling excursions, and sunset cruises. An authentic local experience.

Resort Transfers

Most resorts arrange all transfers from Malé airport. Packages typically include seaplane or speedboat transfers as part of the resort booking.

Best Time to Visit

Dry Season: November – April ☀️

The best time to visit with calm seas, clear skies, and excellent visibility for snorkeling and diving. December to March is peak season with the best weather. Ideal for water sports and beach activities.

Shoulder Season: November & April 🌤️

Transition months with good weather and slightly lower prices than peak season. November marks the start of the dry season while April is the last month before the monsoon arrives.

Wet Season: May – October 🌧️

The southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher seas, but the Maldives rarely experiences prolonged storms. Significantly lower hotel rates (up to 50% off) and fewer tourists make it attractive for budget travelers.

Manta Ray Season: May – November 🐟

Ironically, the wet season coincides with the best time to see manta rays at Hanifaru Bay (Baa Atoll). The plankton-rich waters attract hundreds of mantas, making it a world-class wildlife spectacle.
